Choosing a topic
- What was the process by which you narrowed down potential topics to two appropriate ones? And how were these decisions made on the basis of either class discussion, or our required, course textbook or both?
- I was simply thinking of common problems in today's community and topics from previous health classes. I ended up with obesity but had to come up with a more specific question. I then came up with “what does the future look like when it come to adolescence and obesity? What could be a cause for this and what can be done to help with the current health problem?” and “what is the relationship between obesity, depression and suicidal actions when it comes to adolescence? What can be done to help improve obesity, the psychological disorders that come with it or both?”. I made these decisions based on class and chose my question from the information learned in class and also from the readings. In class we talked about having too big of a topic and this has specific key terms allowing me to narrow my search. Also according to the book if I choose the right question it will supposedly makes it easy because I know what I am looking up and with this question I feel like it is true. Also this topic has plenty of articles allowing me to make a literature review based off the information I can find.
- What research question did you choose, and how can I be sure you’re making a reasoned, academic judgement on the basis of chapters 1-2
- I chose “what is the relationships between obesity, depressions and suicidal actions when it comes to adolescence? If there is a relationship what can be done to improve these current health problems?.” I chose this because it is specific with what I am researching, but gives multiple topics so I have more than enough information on the paper. It has plenty of articles allowing me to explore more ideas and keeping me away from beings one sided on the topic. I also chose this question because as stated in the book it says to keep the question narrow but not too small, which I believe I have done. I also kept stayed away from a leading question.
- What article are you basing this question on, and what type of article is it (research, theory, policy, practice) (apa citations)?
- I am basing this question on the citation below. The reason I chose this article is because this is a research article trying to prove that obesity is not connected to suicidal attempts and are actually more likely to commit suicide after having bariatric surgery. This is good because it helps me stay neutral on the question as stated in the book.
Heneghan, Helen M. (01/01/2012). "Weighing the evidence for an association between obesity and suicide risk". Surgery for obesity and related diseases (1550-7289), 8 (1), p. 98.
- How can I be sure that the key vocabulary of the question corresponds not only to literature in the field, but also to chapter 1-2 (aveyard2014)
- The literature corresponds in the field because obesity is a very common problem in public health and also many articles popped up when doing searches for the question in the American Journal of Public Health website. When it comes to the book it tells us to review things we see or hear in our lives. In many of my public health classes obesity is a term brought up. This brought me to wondering if there are any mental disorders that may go with obesity leading me to the current question I have right now.
- Based on what your question is, what kind of literature are you going to need? Again please explicitly reference the text (aveyard 2014). What is your hierarchy of evidence?
- Ranking from most important to least
- Qualitative and quantitative to show if there is a relationship or not.
- Systematic reviews of relationship
- Expert opinions
- Systematic reviews of what has been shown to help with problems.
- How exactly did your research question arise out of “practice”?
- Well practice is considered something I am interested or possibly going into. I want to become a physical therapist so this doesn't have much to do with my possible future career. The topic itself I do find interesting but the only connection I can find is that when I shadow therapist I notice people do have a harder time recovering if they are overweight or obese, so if this could reduce obesity it could help with recovery. Also if someone is depressed they may not be motivated to work on their recovery, which would also be making recovery difficult.
- How do you define your key terms, and how do these definitions link to key journals in the field?
- Relationship: is it common to see the two health problems together
- Obesity causes suicide
- Obesity causes depression
- Depression cause obesity
- Ways to help: education, therapy, stopping bullying, increase activity levels, surrounding food (quantitative)
- Did anything unexpected happen? From your initial search, does it appear as though your research question will work? Or does the vocabulary and/or type of research sought need to be changed?
- At first it seemed difficult finding a topic and then question that interested me, but after I found the question it got easier to finish the assignment. From the initial search it seems there is plenty of articles showing the relationship of the two health problems. I am more worried for the second half of the essay on finding ways to help with the problem.
- Any final thoughts?
- It seems like the question will work and will be an interesting topic.
The following picture shows the article that helped me find my question and is also where I am leaving off for this assignment. What is next for me is most likely looking for more articles to get a bigger picture of my question and also gives me more valid information instead of just relying on one article.

Hello post
I posted this to show it is easy to copy pictures from a laptop screen to our blog. All I did was push the print screen button, pasted the picture on paint and uploaded it to blogger. I also chose this picture because this might be the topic I write my paper on.
